Don’t Get Wrecked By The January Effect!

Are you planning on taking charge of your fitness lifestyle this January?

Here’s hoping you think enough of yourself to do just that…and stay with it!

Now, let’s do everything we can to make sure that you’re still training come November 2016.

In another week, the wait time for my favorite equipment at the gym will lengthen considerably. So I adjust my schedule accordingly, knowing that in about two months things will normalize. There will be a lot less people.

To greatly increase your probability of permanent progress, Consider The Following:

1. Fitness doesn’t happen fast–neither does changing your physical appearance with diet and exercise. But you don’t need it to happen fast because this is a lifestyle gig, not a movie shoot. Enter this transformation, therefore, with sensible expectations.

You didn’t get out of shape in two weeks, so don’t expect to get in shape in that short time period!

2. Have your tentative game plan ahead of time and spend some time rehearsing it in your mind.

‘Tentative’ is an important description here because you need to count on this being very much a ‘learn as you grow’ experience. The idea is to have fun with it. After all, you’re already stressed enough from everything else in your life – – this is about you, so relax.

3. Stay close to people who truly want you to succeed, and refuse to share your positive vision with negative ‘friends’.

You get the picture.

It’s critical, during this initial period, to surround yourself with support.

While there are many other things that contribute to your success, for the immediate future, focus first on these.

Just get going…

  1. Hi Steve, I always enjoy your posts. I’d like to second your remarks here.

    I’d also like to add two observations based on my experience as a 63 year-old woman who lifts weights:

    One is that at our age, aesthetic outcomes, while nice, are going to be less dramatic. It’s more about better muscle tone, better sleep, better stamina, better mood, better physiological markers of health (bone density, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc.) and less about getting a six-pack or losing a lot of weight. So work out for how you’re going to feel instead of how you’re going to look. However, don’t be surprised when your friends start commenting on how good you look and want to know what your secret is.

    The other is that if we don’t enjoy what we’re doing for its own sake, we won’t stick with it. We’ve got to love what we do, it’s how we’re hard-wired. (I hesitate to say “learn to love,” because that doesn’t always work.) As you point out, Steve, positive results from exercise don’t happen overnight. But it’s not willpower that will keep us in the game, it’s motivation, and motivation ultimately flows from love, not fear of decrepitude. Fear might get us into the gym, but it won’t keep us there, especially if we’re not predisposed to exercise. If we’re bored by exercise and have to force ourselves to do it, eventually our good intentions will break down and we’ll find ourselves back on the couch hoisting nothing more than a beer and the remote. So find something you enjoy for its own sake and that offers enough intellectual and/or emotional inspiration in the moment to keep you fascinated and striving.

    Well said and I couldn’t agree with you more. I have always believed in lifelong learning and fitness (lifestyle) is no different. It is something you do each day without having to question your motives…….I do it so I can still go out and surf for two or three hours at a time and would love to still be doing it when I am 80. That’s good enough motivation for me.
